Welcome to Infinite Scroll. If you ever why people behave they way they do online, this is the place for you.
The Politics of Posting
People talk about things on the internet. We talk about politics. We talk about culture, about society, about each other. But we don’t pay enough attention to how the internet is changing all of those things. What are the cultural and social consequences of social media? How are our politics shaped by online discourse?
That’s what Infinite Scroll is here to do. If you’re interested in following along, subscribe below.
I’m kicking things off with a few posts. The first is The One Ring of Posting and serves as something of a thesis statement for this project. The second is tentatively titled This Week in Discourse and will be a weekly series documenting the most important trends in social media, the most insane posts, and everything worth noting about what’s happening online. There’s also Is Blue Sky the Actual Twitter Replacement?, analyzing the factors that cause social media sites to rise and fall.
The blog will feature a mix of these two ideas moving forward. On one hand, simply collecting and documenting what’s happening online with some focus on the most interesting, funniest and craziest trends. On the other hand, more serious and analytical deep dives into those trends, explaining why we behave the way we do on social media.
To start, all posts will be free. At some point in the near future, I’ll begin paywalling some content - but I’ll be sure to give notice well in advance of that happening.
Like so many of us, I’m at least mildly addicted to the internet. I want to consume the best content, but I also want to understand it. I want to understand why we post, what the discourse is doing to us, and what it all means. If you’re interested in that as well, I’d be glad to have you along for the ride.
