As many of you may know (but some may not!) in addition to writing Infinite Scroll I also host the Center for New Liberalism’s podcast. Over the past month, I’ve recorded a number of podcasts relevant to what we talk about here, and about the world of technology and social media. If you’re a podcast person, check them out!
Social Media in Chaos ft. Mike Masnick
I sat down with Mike Masnick, founder of Techdirt, to talk about why so many social media sites are engulfed in controversy right now. Mike’s an insightful guy and I always learn something when I chat with him.
Ugh, Capitalism
I was invited on the ‘Free The Economy’ podcast as a guest to discuss my Ugh, Capitalism piece from a few weeks ago. We dive much deeper than the original piece does about the history of this kind of complaint and what it means in The Discourse.
Hollywood on Strike
To me, the conflict between studios and writers/actors can’t be separated from how technology has changed - particularly social video sites like YouTube, TikTok, etc. TV writer and WGA member Jeff Maurer chats with me about why the writers feel like they’re getting a raw deal and how AI and streaming tech factor into the strike.
If you’re interested in seeing more podcast content natively, let me know!
I listened to the Hollywood on Strike episode yesterday during work, I thought it was a good breakdown of the situation. I think Matt Belloni has done a great job exploring this in-depth over on The Town podcast, as well.
If we're picking sides, I'm certainly more on the union side of things, but I thought you did a good job holding Maurer's feet to the fire on the question re: people's feelings on Big Tech, because the idea that "everyone hates Big Tech, this is known" is peak Twitter-brain. I thought his response was pretty dodgy ("well, we can agree that some people hate Big Tech"), but at least you pushed him on it.
